Argostoli City
If you want to experience the full range of what Kefalonia has to offer, you need to visit the city of Argostoli. The scenery is beautiful and is full of historical and cultural landmarks.
The town has been the capital of the island, and one of the safest Mediterranean ports since 1757.
It is a beautiful port city, surrounded by small, luscious hills and lies on the west side of Kefalonia, with approximately 10.000 residents. The town was rebuilt after the catastrophic earthquake of 1953. At the edge of the bay, lies the Koutavos Limnothalassa, surrounded by deep green vegetation, with very high eucalyptus trees.
Makris Gialos Beach
Located just outside Argostoli in the tourist town of Lassi, Makris Gialos is the most renowned organized beach of the island. The beach lies around a lovely sparkling bay with azure crystal clear waters.
It is easily accessible through a flight of stairs and it’s quite ideal for young children as it is a sandy beach with crystal-clear blue waters.This beautiful beach is surrounded by lush vegetation of tall pine trees rendering summery relaxed vibes.Makris Gialos beach was certified with the International Blue Flag due to its cleanliness, safety and organization.The beach is organized with beach bars, sunbeds and parasols offering the ideal setting for a relaxed pastime. For sports lovers, you should know that there is a beach volleyball court as well as a tennis court at your disposal.If you’re looking for adventure, water sports facilities are available at Makris Gialos beach.
Saint Theodore’s Lighthouse
The lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi lies on a man-made peninsula close to Argostoli village, the capital of the island. It is a circular structure with 20 columns and its tower is 8 m tall. The building has a rather simple and Doric architectural style, while its focal plane is 11 m. It was originally built in 1828 by the British administrator Charles Napier, who ruled the island that time.
Myrtos Beach
Considered by many tourist magazines as one of the 30 best beaches in the World, Myrtos bay is not only the symbol of Kefalonia, but it’s also one of the most famous beaches all over Greece. Myrtos beach is placed in the region of Pylaros, along the north-west coast of the island.This marvelous bay is surrounded by tall and green cliffs and is made by million of white small pebbles. The color of the sea changes from dark blue to electric blue and turquoise, and the panorama offered by Myrtos beach is really stunning at every moment of the day.The view from the cliff is dramatic and breathtaking, it will be like looking the bay from an airplane!Every tourist who’s having holidays in Kefalonia island will fall in love with Myrtos beach.
Antisamos Beach
The beautiful beach of Antisamos is one of the most famous and popular of the island of Kefalonia. It is located about 22 kilometers from the town of Argostoli and a short distance from the village of Sami. It is surrounded by verdant hills which, in addition to guaranteeing shelter from the wind, offer a unique panorama. It is a large bay characterized by white pebbles and fabulous sea, the water is so transparent that you can distinguish the multitude of fish even without a mask and you can not wait to dive! Antisamos beach has increased its fame especially in recent years, after having been chosen to shoot several scenes of the film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" with Nicolas Cage.
Melissani Lake
Melissani lake: is located about 2km from the Sami village on the island of Kefalonia. The cave lake is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island. On the outside, the cave is surrounded by trees and forests and on the inside, a magnificent site opens a rocky cave filled with crystal clear water.In Greek mythology, the site is known as the Cave of the Nymphs. It has two big halls and an island in the middle. One of the halls opens on the surface and lets the light in, which makes the water so clear it seems that the boats are gliding through the air.
Drogarati Cave
Drogarati cave: was discovered 300 years ago and opened to the public in 1963. It was discovered when a strong earthquake caused a collapse that revealed the cave's entrance. Drogarati is an impressive cave with remarkable formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Speleologists say that this cave is about 150 million years old and constitutes a rare geological phenomenon. The cave is about 60m deep and has a constant temperature of 18ΊC. The humidity of the cave reaches 90%.
Assos Village
Around 36 km north of Argostoli, the capital city of Kefalonia, lies the tiny yet enchanting village of Assos, a hidden, artistically beautiful place that will provide you with a very relaxing experience and is worth visiting!This small village is one of the must-sees due to its harmonic mixture of picturesque elements.It's located at the hill of the small Erissos peninsula. Although its size is tiny and its population doesn't surpass 100 in number, it's a place that carries great historical significance, due to its strategic location.
Fiscardo Village
Fiskardo is a picturesque and cosmopolitan harbor village, 60km from the capital of Argostoli and 32km from Agia Efimia at the northest part of the island. It is situated in the beautiful region of Erissos, with its rolling hills covered with olive and impressive cypress trees. Fiskardo and Assos are both unique in that they were left virtually undamaged after the great earthquake of 1953, keeping their original architecture. The Greek government has recognized Fiskardo’s unique beauty by declaring it a region of great natural beauty and protecting it by law. It is true that this is a blessed location, and that one should not miss coming here when visiting the island!
Xi Beach
Eight kilometres from Lixouri, the second largest village of Kefalonia, you will find Xi.This beach immediately stands out with its special, natural beauty and orange/red sand.This beach is ideal for both photography enthusiasts and sunbathes.Xi beach is surrounded by white clay cliffs which gives it a striking appearance that’s quite different from the other beaches in Kefalonia. It’s safe for kids and has parking available so if you’re in the area then why not pop over and spend some time on this fabulous stretch of Ionian coast.
